Hardwired internet cable?

I searched around and could not find the answer to my question.

Basically I have a XTE-2005 filtered faceplate and I have cut off one end of my internet cable and wired it into the ADSL IDC terminals (B - Orange/white A - Orange) on the XTE-2005 and plugged the other end (RJ11) into my router.

Everything works fine, sync is the same and router stats have stayed the same so its all good in that respect.

So my question is, is it ok to do it like that because I could not find any information that said you shouldn't.

Completely wrong, but I don't see why it shouldn't work fine, so long as nothing else is wired unfiltered to the same two (A/B) terminals.

(Edit - MHC is technically correct, but see my answer to him as well. Do you have anything else wired to the A/B terminals?)

Why didn't you just plug the internet cable into the ADSL socket on it?

Yes that should be fine.
You can use either the normal RJ11 socket OR the ADSL IDC terminals if you want to keep the faceplate clean looking etc.

Sorry, but you are WRONG. The XTE2005 is designed to have connections made to its A&B terminals. They are not the BT input terminals.

It may not be ideal but there is nothing wrong with it and more can be wired - provided it is filtered when needed.

Think deeper. (See my next response to you as to why ).

The A/B are unfiltered, hence my statement it should be OK.

The bit about nothing else being connected to them was (a deliberate) simplification, with the follow-up to be as you say if the OP said he had extensions wired onto them. Those would need to be filtered.

Given the way the question was put, I chose to do it this way.

I should also have said in my first reply to you that as the purpose of the A/Bs is to provide unfiltered extensions, my logic was that having directly wired an ADSL cable to them it seemed unlikely he would ever connect the router at an extension.

Therefore it would not make sense for there to be anything else on the A/B. Hence my simplification.

I was only half awake, and I now agree I shouldn't have worded it as I did. Over-simplified to the point of incorrectness.

I have added the word "unfiltered" (underlined) to the offending bit.

So it is perfectly ok to do it this way then?

The reason why I did not plug straight into the ADSL socket is because the master socket is in the hallway and directly on the other side of the wall is a phone extension socket, I did not want the router in the hall as its narrow and would be in the way.

So I ran the cable through the wall but found no way of getting the cable to pass out the side of the master socket so it could be plugged in the conventional way without cutting into the BT part of the socket, no way was I going to do that.

And I know I could have just plugged into the extension but I wanted it connected at the master even though it made no difference.

Nothing else is plugged into the A & B terminals, the extension wiring is wired into the white IDC block.

Should be fine .

The people to check with to make absolutely sure would be ADSL Nation. Maybe drop them an email?

Yes, if I've understood what you've done then using the ADSL IDC connections is fine, that's what they are there for.

The ADSLNation faceplate (I use one!) has both filtered and unfiltered IDC connections. The unfiltered connections are for your router the filtered ones are for any 'voice' equipment.

Ignore the other poster that says you've done it all wrong - he's very old and easily confused!
