tethering a tablet

[link to this post]

I am thinking of buying a tablet with wifi only. I am thinking that I would tether it to my mobile phone for online access. However I am not sure if the procedure is practical. I would welcome any comments.

You can do this with Apple iPhones, Android phones and some Blackberry's

It also depends on your Mobile Phone access provider (O2, Vodafone etc).

O2 allow this on all tarrifs now, but the allowance is horrid (500MB - 1gb)
Three disallow it in the T&Cs

Now if you have a provider that allows it & and Android phone I can help!

H3G (Three) expressly permit it on their pay monthly One Plan, I link my Android tab's via my Nexus and it works nicely, I don't really need to think about it one week to the nextsmile

Giffgaff with a one-off Gigabag costing £5 could suit your needs. It's 500MB, lasts 30 days, and allows tethering. They have some higher allowance gigabags as well.

If it's the Google Nexus 7 tablet (which has been the rage these last few days) you plan to buy, it is not yet clear if you can tether by USB cable from your phone. But if your phone has a Wi-Fi Hotspot option this should most definitely work with the tablet.

I very much like to know how to link "Kindle" to your mobile. In view of the fact that the cable liking the kindle to a PC for charging would not connect to a phone. Can you please explain how to do it?

By wifi? Tethering to your phone to use your phones data connection.

"Apple iPhones, Android phones and some Blackberry's"

Don't forget Nokia. Though these days it's mostly of historical interest except to a dedicated few, Symbian users with a suitable phone and app have been able to do this for years (eg on the E71 since 2008). Some folk still do.

I am sorry I do not follow what you propose. You are out and about with your phone on 3g, and your kindle which only connects on wifi. So how do you connect the kindle ( which has a none standard usb ) to your phone (which has a micro usb connection)
