What's it generally used for (gaming, movies, MS apps)?

Hi there

mainly used for browsing, emailing , watching films online ( love film, netflix), no gaming.

the screen i have now is 19" the old style non widescreen i see they are all wide screen now, and it seems hard to find one without.

so i was thinking if it has to be a wide screen may be a 22" ? thank you

Have a look at the LG range, good value and good all round monitors. Mine is 3 years old and came with DVI, HDMI and VGA inputs so very flexible.

The standard size is 21.5" not 22" even though most headline specs and it is worth noting that the primary manufacturers of panels are LG, Samsung and Sharp with a few lesser known ones.

Bear in mind it's a glancing recommendation based on price, other monitor spec and general reviews. I would never buy a monitor without at least a couple of hours of research.

Reviews seem favourable. One common niggle is that the stand seems flimsy and does not have height adjustment. Also, no HDMI port. It's also 16:9 which may or may not be what you're after (I prefer a more square monitor, and spent a lot of time looking for a decent one, but had to settle for 16:10 in the end.)

many thanks for the replys

i would like a "more square monitor" , seems like they do not do them any more

my friend recommends this from novatech, is it good value for money and what's it like compared to the Philips (above) , thank you

I see both monitors say full hd, but the connection is dvi? does this mean you will get full 1080p when watching selected iplayer , netflix, lovefilm content in hd, thanks

Well it's a Novatech monitor by a Novatech company. That in itself would mean that I would ignore the reviews on that site. Google for other Novatech reviews.

It seems to be of similar spec, but also has speakers (which I don't look for in a monitor personally).

I'm with MHC on this one - I don't think LG can be beaten in the monitor market. I have two (one three years old and the other just one) and both are truly superb - great build quality, still not a single lost pixel and never a problem.

This may be a good lead (google for better prices via other sites perhaps):-

If you have nothing other than DVI then you may need a DVI/DSub adapter - no great expense:-
