Netgear Router

[link to this post]

Looking to get a new Router and don't know which to go for.

I've looked at this, but the review doesn't seem that good.. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/hardware/reviews/67-ne...

Can anyone recommend which Netgear Router to get.. bomb proof if possible at a reasonable price wink

PS.. not looking for Wireless, I'm hard wired smile

DG834N is now out-of-date and was only Draft N. Probably replaced by one of DGNxx00 series.

But if you are only wanted wired, you can get any of the DG834 series cheap on eBay. The Broadcom chipset ones (Gv4, GT, PN & N, also DGN2000) are considered to perform best with most ISPs. Remember you might need wireless in future for some portable device.

Seems expensive to me. Do you need gigabit speeds? It'll only be useful if you connect gigabit devices.

Very dear! I got a new boxed DG834GT on eBay for < £20. Why pay a lot for wireless you don't need?

Beware: That model has no modem which you need for ADSL. For that, only look at ones with "DG" in their names.

I'm obviously a total noob with Routers...

Now I'm totally confused, my Belkin router did both Wifi and ADSL, I thought they all did. But I stopped using Wifi in favour of wired a long time ago.

EDIT:

Sorry Mods, looks like I've posted this in the wrong forum.. can you direct it to the right one.. I just saw Hardware and posted here.

We are a bit sloppy with terms. When we talk about routers we invariably mean a router with a built-in ADSL modem. The ADSL part plugs in to the phone line and gives access to the internet. The router part usually has four wired ports so four computers can be linked to each other and the internet. Actually we usually also assume the router has a wifi part as well. So we sort of understand router to mean a device which in one box provides a four port router, an ADSL modem, and a wifi.

If you are buying a device from a shop you'll need to ensure it has every "part" you require.

Something like the Netgear Wireless N150 Modem Router (925/5100) from Argos at £39.99 should be fine. Wireless, ADSL, and 4 port router.
