2 different routers. 2 different speeds. Is this normal?

Mod: If I have posted this to the wrong section, feel free to move to the correct section. Thanks.

Hi all,

I have been using Draytek Vigor 2800 for many years and I am currently using it to connect as ADSL2+ broadband.

Here's the stats:

Down Speed: 4753900
Up Speed: 864000
SNR Margin: 5.5
Loop Att.: 41.5

I borrowed an D-Link DSL-2640R router and was surprised to see this stats:

Downstream: 5984 kbps
Upstream: 864 kbps

SNR Margin (dB): 3.0 (D) 10.9 (U)
Attenuation (dB): 46.0 (D) 27.9 (U)
Output Power (dBm): 0.0 (D) 12.3 (U)

(D) - Downstream
(U) - Upstream

Apart from the same upstream speed, I was surprised to see the difference between both of them for the downstream speed. Is this normal?

HOWEVER! I did a speedtest and both of them came out with similar result. But I think it's because I have not done the 10 days learning period. Would this have been affected?

Here's the BT speed tester when I used the D-Link router:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 4.26 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 5.28 Mbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.65Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

Will the IP profile increase within the 10 days period?

Thanks all.

It's not unusual for 2 routers to report slightly diff syncs. E.g. I get 19 Meg vs. 20 Meg between 2 diff routers at the same NM.

But in your case, note that diff in NM could account for diff in speeds.

Thanks. Can you remind me what NM is?

"Noise Margin" or as your router calls it "SNR Margin"

Oh yes, obviously! I'm slow today. laugh

I guess it might be worth going with the D-Link just to gain more download speed... which make sense! Then allow the 10 days training to finish before I see better speed.

Thanks.

These days it should only take a few days, 3 I think for your ip profile to update and give you a slightly faster download

TalkTalk ??Mb
BT 8Mb
Virgin 50Mb
BT 7Mb

Other ISP's used over the years
AOL
Supanet
Pipex
Tiscali
Eclipse
Zen

It's not all about speed - the draytek may keep the connection more stable at that speed. Only time will tell.

There is a big difference in the attenuation figures of 41.5 and 46.
At 41.5 I'd expect to see a sync of between around 6.5 and 8.5 depending on modulation. At 46 I'd expect to see a sync of somewhere between around 5.5 and 7.5.

Thanks, but as you can see, the download speed is higher with the 46 figures, so I am a little bit confused.

With my Draytek, I have never managed to achieve more than 4.7 download...
