What to do with a Gigabit connection

[link to this post]

Well after over 3 years of badgering my freeholder we finally got Hyperoptic live a few days ago. Lockes Wharf is the latest Hypersite!

Question for you Hypersonic users - What can I do with this speed!?

I dont know where I could stream 4K tv or something data hungry!

My speed isnt too bad - I suspect my hardware will be slowing the speed down!

Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Testing from Cogent Communications...
Hosted by Vodafone UK (London) [0.96 km]: 5.395 ms
Testing download speed........................................
Download: 754.65 Mbits/s
Testing upload speed..................................................
Upload: 201.59 Mbits/s

I upgraded my Ubuntu to the latest distribution in under 6 seconds (410MB download)

I could buy a HD download of something I guess?

Anyway very impressed so far, but hard not to be as my speed was under 4 Meg before on ADSL!

YouTube has a good load of 4K content that will look better than HD

Also time to look at cloud storage as you can now upload probably as fast as you can copy onto a USB stick.

A speed test via http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html or http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/ispa (no need for flash/java on the second one) with postcode will help put the flats onto our map as faster than your average fibre.

Convert a bed room to a server room and start up the next google...

You could set up a VPN server and offer VPN access to people so they can watch iPlayer when not in the UK ... probably not legit.

Host a load of legal torrents like linux distros etc.

Set up a hotspot and give free Wi-Fi to your neighbours that are too tight to pay for Hyperoptic ... probably a breach ot their T's & C's.

You could fill up a Sky 2TB box in super quick time and then spend the next two two months, watching TV 24/7, before you needed to watch anything else again.......

If it has USB3 you could try a USB3 Gigabit Network adapter.

No Problem, as to if you'll get a full Gigabit off a USB adapter I'm not sure but I've seen the USB3 ones get over 600Mbit/s

What a funny old world we live in, where the limitation on speed is firmly within the household... I'd have laughed at you if you told me that this would happen back when ADSL was being rolled out: I had a 100mbit LAN then and a 512Kb/sec Pipex ADSL connection!
