ubuntu natty & r8168 lan driver

[link to this post]

I bought myself a new network card just for the sheer heck of it and as an excuse to stop using the onboard setup (which i am using right now btw).

PC is opened up. I sneeze several times and so does the dog; so off i run downstairs o grab the vacuum cleaner to get rid of all the dust and [censored] inside (i might make him a new dog bed with the waste matter) before inserting the card (anti static ... etc.. all as it should be) closed up and turned on.

during bootup i disabled the onboard lan in bios and then continued into ubuntu 11.4 natty.

instructions were followed from the install cd, ie make clean .. make modules .. make install as well as previously removing the current r8169 driver which is not Gb eth.

finally do an ifconfig -a and the device appears. The flashing led is working on the card and after setting up a connection a quick check shows data going in and out.

so here i am thinking this was actually quite easy. ok not a click and forget thing, but it took me back to my childhood. so... open a browser and try google.. nothing. try a few ip addresses incase of a dns issue. nothing frustration ... try logging in to my router. nothing. try pinging the router. success.

created a new static connection (same details as i am using now) and do the same as above. no joy. the card is active. the driver r8168 shows that it is installed correctly. the old driver has been removed and blacklisted. the browser has a direct connection. no proxies etc. network devices have all been rebooted.

nothing!

2 days down the line and nothing. i will try again at the weekend but if there is no joy i may go back to windows as this is nothing short of frustration.

i even tried installing the windows drivers via wine.

i am relatively new to linux. just a few months but have grown quite fond of it. i could always save the card for a future project, but i want it to work right now..

1. I wouldn't recommend using a vacuum cleaner on the insides of a computer, but that's an aside.

2. As you can ping the router, the NIC must be working, so all I can think is that you may have MAC filtering enabled on your router. As your MAC has changed, this would block traffic.

Could you post the output of (sudo) ifconfig and (sudo) route?

AEP .. you are a star!

I had considered MAC filtering before I even added the driver but then quickly dismissed it as I don't remember / didn't remember adding it. I'm using the new card now, so thank you.

I had even read somewhere that this driver only goes to kernal 2.4x and that natty is on3.x so i would need to recompile the kernal. heck. i even considered windows.. i am happy
