Are ubuntu updates evil?

[link to this post]

I couldn't be bothered thinking of a better title for this query as it is a little strange. Anyway, here goes.

Several weeks ago I got myself a nice new network card and spent a few days trying to get it working - because stupid me had MAC filtering on my router. Well it had been working perfectly until today.

About 2pm I received indication on my machine (using latest ubuntu) that there were new updates ready and I should restart my machine. I was busy and left it until around 4pm when I had to go out. I let it reboot.

I returned home around 8pm and there was no Internet. Well I am sure that a lot of you boys and girls with even a little experience with networking, etc will sympathise with the following scenario of just rebooting all equipment because that would be too easy. Nope we need to run all sorts of diagnostic tools and use different sets of cabling and even differnet network cards.

Well I am online now (which is quite obvious) however the driver I installed for the new nettwork card several weeks ago appears to have vanished. Eth1 no longer exists in any checks on my pc and for the life of me i cannoty figure out why.

Ubuntu updates are not evil.

It is a characteristic of any Linux distribution that if you install extermal modules (drivers) they will need to be rebuilt when a new kernel is installed. This affects mainly networks drivers, graphics drivers, and programs such as VirtualBox.

Those in the know use DKMS to do this automatcally.
