If you can do that, it argues that you can access the physical box, and get access by other means too, I think

Yep. Once you can access the box it is trivial to view the contents of any disks, or to boot a Linux distribution. Same goes for Windows, OS X, you name it.

Disk encryption has a lot to recommend it.

And, as I understand it, would defeat this "bug". (I always thought it was dead easy to get to a Grub command line with far less keystrokes than this, but who knows).

The fact that disk encryption is so good is also it's Achilles heel. I lose count of the posts I've seen where someone can't access an encrypted disk because of some small error.

What do you suggest instead to boot a Linux installation?

(And, yes, I love GRUB - it's a great bit of software.)

But hardly user-friendly, in my opinion, and one of the things which frightens some people away from Linux.

If you have a single-boot setup you won't even see GRUB. If you have a dual-boot setup it means you have to select one from a menu of two options. And it's a damn site easier to configure (and a lot more versatile) than the latest Windows boot loader. Certainly not the most unfriendly software that I have ever used.

And, I repeat - if you don't use GRUB how else are you going to boot Linux?
