Linux Distro

Can anyone, please recommend a good Linux Distro?

I would be most grateful, thanks in advance.

Good for what?

Edit: If you just want a desktop/laptop replacement, then Ubuntu desktop or one of its 'flavours' should be fine. If you have special requirements, or want to do software development, then you may need to be more picky. There is no 'best' Linux distro, just horses for courses.

Some ideas:

- Ubuntu desktop if you have no special requirements.
- Ubuntu Studio if you want to do lots of multimedia stuff.
- Elementary OS if you want an OS X look-alike (note: it's free--you don't have to pay for it).
- Linux Mint is a popular choice for software developers.
- Lubuntu or Xubuntu for older machines.

For someone used to Windows who wants an alternative OS for their PC then I'd suggest LinuxMint (either Cinnamon or Mate versions)

Linux Mint (Mate or Cinnamon) is the one to go for. General use (as a replacement/alternative to Windows) is ideal. At least give it a try - you'll be surprised - very pleasantly.

Another vote for Linux Mint.

I use the Cinnamon version and find it much nicer than Ubuntu.

My other machines are Macs, and there are a few tweaks that can make the desktop more familiar- mainly moving the Close/Maximise/Minimise buttons to where I expect to find them!

I have used the cinnamon before so i defiantly recommend that and as a added feature it makes you think of cookies... orrr anything else cinnamon flavoured?

I prefer Ubuntu Mate over Mint or Unbuntu.

I haven't tried that one so can't really comment, but I'm happy with Mint Cinnamon so I'll stick with it smile
