Apple keyboards

Can anyone explain to me what the "plus or minus" / propeller (section) key is for on Apple keyboards. US keyboards don't have that key. I'm genuinely puzzled.

Up in the top-left corner, just under the "esc" key?

If you press it, it produces the paragraph character (§), with the shift key it produces the plus/minus sign (±).

Not sure if this forum supports those two characters.

edit- it would appear it does.
