Flashback Trojan affects half a million Macs

[link to this post]

According to a Russian AV firm half a million Macs have been affected by the Flashback Trojan.

From the BBC News website...

and from F-Secure.

The Java for OS X update (66.6MB) has been available via software update for a couple of days now.

Is it annual "let's try to scare the Mac users" time already?

Dr Web also notes that 274 of the infected computers it detected appeared to be located in Cupertino, California - home to Apple's headquarters.

But there are perfectly good free anti-malware packages for the Mac, just as there are for Windows. Not much of a tax, really.

And they would seem to be effective enough that, according to the F-Secure article, this Trojan aborts the installation and deletes itself if it finds one of them installed.

And, of course, in addition to patching the Java issue it will have added the fingerprint to the Malware Removal Tool

Flashback can't gain root/administrator control without user input. Still a concern though that Safari can be so easily hijacked.

It's not Safari, it's Java.

??

Ultimately it is Safari or any other user application being hijacked.
