CD to iPad file transfer

[link to this post]

What is the simplest way to copy a PDF file from a CD to an iPad [1]? The iPad belongs to a friend who is computer-illiterate. He has no iPad accessories and no other Apple kit. His wife has a PC but she is also computer illiterate. I have the CD and a PC but no Apple kit, and I know next to nothing about iPads.

'Sir, please,' she said... 'Will you not share your wisdom with us?'
'I have no wisdom,' he told her.
'Your experiences, then?'
'They have been trivial, uninteresting, and full of error.'

There are several ways to do it - i tend to use email. On the iPad open Mail - the message will show an image of the file attachment - tap and hold the image to bring up the dialogue "Open with" then choose "iBooks". The file is automatically saved there for quick access next time. iBooks is free Apple software available to download from the app store.

+1 for email. No need to install anything else (apart from some PDF reader, which you will need anyway).

Yep iOS will read pdf natively out-of-the-box - all that's missing is a place to store the document outside of the email client hence iBooks. I hope iOS 6 brings Preview with iCloud, that would be great.

I actually prefer GoodReader to iBooks for PDFs (which makes the transfer trivial). It's not free, but it is dead cheap and has a lot of useful features. But iBooks does the job just fine if you want free.

BTW if it's photos you want to transfer to an ipad there is an ipad camera connection kit available from the Apple store. A friend recently bought an ipad and was a bit flummoxed on how to get the pictures onto the iPad from the camera.
