Seems like the new MS CEO has accepted what Bullmer could not; the iPad is and will remain king of tablets for the forseable future, and by denying business users access to Office on it MS were doing themselves no favours at all. It's actually a not half bad product too. Vastly superior in a touch environment to the RT version, which is more like a badly broken version of the desktop app than a touch centred one.

What is interesting is - the need for an Office 365 sub aside - this product is very polished and has clearly been ready to ship for ages.

Makes you realise what a cancer Ballmer was on MS.

Surely the fact that Microsoft is also going to release Office for Android tablets contradicts that view? It seems to me more that Microsoft consider the iPad to be just one tablet amongst equals. A very sensible approach to business - back everyone, not just one specific platform.

And they have always had Office for Windows RT tablets.

It doesn't contradict it at all. The point is that the iPad is THE tablet used by business and not having Office there risked business going elsewhere permanently. What would be more extraordinary is if MS had no plans for the same on Android.

I think just about the whole market agrees that Surface, and particularly RT, is dead in the water. MS releasing Office for iPad is likely one of the last nails in the coffin there. Expect it to be no more very soon now Bullmer has departed.

You may well be right that the iPad is THE tablet, but Microsoft releasing Office for it doesn't prove that. You could use exactly the same argument about Android.

Except they haven't released the Android version yet.

It rather illustrates where the most enterprise-oriented of firms sees its priorities.

Office 365 is now MS's consumer and SME business model so the need for a sub for Office for iPad isn't surprising. Rumour had it that MS has had this on ice for a very long time indeed.Releasing it seems the be the plan B since Surface and RT have gained no traction in the market place.

I always knew it was only a matter of time after Win8 was released that Ballmer would be spending more time with his family. Between this move and the indications that the Start menu will be back in Windows 9 suggests his sucessor is wasting no time at all in stripping all trace of Ballmer's tenancy from the company.

I don't know any business users using Android tablets, even if some use Android phones. I do know lots of business users (whole FTSE 100 companies) that are exclusively using iPads.
