Using iPhone to provide internet connection for iPad

[link to this post]

OK - how to do it - with very very simple instructions please.

I have a LOT of files in Dropbox on both Phone and Pad [ iPhone 5S and early iPad ] iPad is WiFi only

these are mainly used for liturgical purposes and I have, and use, Service sheets in Church [ it's actually a 64page pdf ! ]

Got caught on the hop on Sunday as thing got changed at the last minute and I needed different Readings which I knew I had as a pdf in Dropbox. OK so navigated to the file in Dropbox on the iPad and tried to open it - that specific file been not been used for over a year frown iPad told me I had to be connected to the Internet to open it. Fine , thought I - I'll forget that and deal with it once home.

Only snag was I could not get the iPad then to go back to the complete File List to let me go to the one I use every Sunday !! I do NOT have it in my own memory - 64 pages of Ukrainian for a non-Ukrainian speaker is not easy to memorise. I even rebooted the iPad to try and get my normal file open - nope frown It was still stuck on the File I couldn't get.

Had to use my iPhone Dropbox files and being honest the screen is a bit small for that

A friend told me I should be able to use some of my monthly Data allowance in an emergency as this was, to use the iPhone on the Internet to let me connect to it via WiFi to have opened the file I was in need of.

Does this make sense ? So how do I do it ?

On the iPhone goto settings > personal hotspot switch it on put in a password.
On the iPad goto wifi select your phone type in the password
When done switch it off again on the iPhone.

The other post says how to do it but you do need to check your provider allows tethering - some don't and can disable the option on the phone (eg BT who use the EE network do not allow tethering).

You can set the password each time if you want, and it is visible to you on the iPhone.

There is no need to check with Virgin. The personal Hotspot option will not be visible to you if it is not allowed. Came as a surprise to me when I migrated to BT from O2.

OH - Thats very good then - I'll try it out smile

The option is there on my iPhone - so it sounds as if I should be OK smile

Yes smile If I switch on mobile Data it will work - it gives me the password and warns me that extra charges may apply - but if I'm really stuck it will be a Godsend
