Is there a particular reason why you wouid want the low-energy Bluetooth? It's not as if power consumption is a big deal in a desktop.

Anyway, there's a thread here that discusses forcing the use of a USB Bluetooth dongle: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/94402/forc...

Thank you for the reply, handoff, and a few other iMac iPad/iPhone sync programmes require Bluetooth 4le.

I bought a bt dongle a while back for my 09 Mac Pro.
It initially did work but was very unreliable. Sometimes it worked and other times it didn't. I gave up as I didn't really need the handoff functionality that much. They aren't expensive so if you need handoff it's worth a try.
