[link to this post]

I have bought a cheap backup phone from three mobile, its unlocked. Its come with a sim card with £10 credit/add on. Once its activated will the phone then be locked to 3 mobile or still remain unlocked?

Its a PAYG phone.

No worry, your new mobile phone will remain unlocked if you wish to choose another service provider.
I bought my Microsoft Lumia 640 mobile phone unlocked SIM Free from John Lewis with 2 Years warranty and I put iD Mobile SIM in the phone they are on the 3 network and it all works fine. wink

Thanks for the reply.
I tested it with a non 3 sim and it picks it up no problem, i was just not sure if somehow the 3 sim once activated will lock it.

I believe that iPhones will 'lock' to the network of the first inserted SIM, virtually all other 'unlocked' phones remain unlocked for life.

I believe this is partly true but it depends on the origin. iPhones bought from Apple are unlocked forever. "SIM free" iPhones from the likes of Carphone Warehouse will lock to the network of the first SIM.

Some networks, like 3, supply all of their phones unlocked (and will unlock older phones for free)

Glad you got it sorted but for the benefit of others I had great difficulty in changing SIM on a PAYG Galaxy I bought from Tesco a couple of years back. Tesco locked it for one year (fair enough, it was very cheap) and then their helpful customer service gave me an unlocking code.

Only problem was that it did not work with the new Three SIM I had bought from a local shop. After much hassle I found that the unlocking procedure required the insertion of an activated SIM. I put my new SIM in my wife's phone, activated it by making one call, then transferred it to the Samsung and the unlocking procedure worked fine. Still using it today.

No, a SIM free phone bought from Apple will remain SIM free regardless of network used.

If needed you can reset the carrier setting in the general options

I would think it would be a cop-out if this happened, as it is your property and was sold sim free, so should remain as such regardless of which providers sim you choose

Tesco do cheap phones without contract some are locked to their network(o2) but they also sell unlocked sim free phones too, though these tend to be a bit more expensive
