3G for laptop and desktop?

[link to this post]
I wasn't sure whether to post in the 'slowspot' forum. I can only get 2meg phoneline at best and 3G is maybe a nobrainer, 300k+ down versus 200k-. The only thing is maybe capping limits.

I'd be happy using on a laptop and a software firewall but is there any way to use a hardware firewall, like standalone routers, for use for desktop? Don't want to rely wholly on soft and/or connection sharing in the op. system. thanks

There are 3G routers, a quick Google should find you some.

My god, who would have thought of that!!!

You know, I'm sooooooooooooo unimaginative. But you have inspired me to new heights. Why, only yesterday in town a tourist stopped me and asked after the local cinema. Instead of an answer I replied: WH Smith has local What's On guides and maps.

If you didn't want the answer why did you ask it?

You asked "is there any way to use a hardware firewall, like standalone routers" and you got the reply that there were indeed 3G standalone routers available. What more did you want?

Don't assume that you'll always get the top speed from 3G - even at a "good" signal strength I am not getting more than about 1200kbps from Orange at my home location. I also tried it in different places in the house, and it made no difference to the speed.

Home ADSL: Sky Max LLU 3864kbps down, 625kbps up
Business ADSL: ZeN Office 8000 127kbps Down, 632kbps Up
Orange 3G Business Everywhere Mobile BB 1200kbps down, 320kbps up
Stats shown are recent measurements
