3G 4G Data Speed

[link to this post]

I have just purchased a Vodafone data SIM for my Huawei E5776.

The Vodafone mast is about 150 metres away (and I know that it is both 4G and 3G) but the E5776 shows the connection as 3G but the TBB Speedtest shows

which seems faster than what I would expect for 3G?

In the past when it was only a 3G mast, then speeds were around:-

Could be a DC-HSPA+ enabled mast, which is theoretically upto 42mbps, so anything around 30mbps in real world usage is possible. Can't be anyone else using it!

Given its Vodafone and that sort of speed on 3G is very unexpected - it probably means the 4G/LTE transmissions are due any day. (if your SIM and device are compatible, and price plan enabled).

The 1.8mbps speeds show how awful Vodafone was without the CTIL upgrades. The competition (Three, EE) were generally exceeding this.

plusnet unlimited fibre 80/20 since 2 Jun 14 / Sync 6th Nov: 58,280/10,784 kbps with G.INP

Likely very few using the mast which on Google Earth is at 53.196534 -3.026500
The shadow shows the new steel mast with an antenna of larger diameter than the mast. The Street View image shows the original 3G mast on a wooden pole.

I live 165 metres 228 degrees from the mast, so get a good signal.

Both the E5776 and the SIM are 4G capable, but have yet to fine tune the settings.

Amusingly(?) my BT FTTC modem failed yesterday (replaced by BT this morning) and the Vodafone signal proved most useful during that time.

For the amount of data throughput I need for backup purposes, away from home etc, I am going to investigate a roaming SIM which could handle most if not all UK networks.

Cheers!
