Belkin router won't connect to Netgear modem

[link to this post]
Hi I am trying to connect a Belkin 4 port wired router F5D5231uk4 to a Netgear DG834G v3 wireless modem.

I've followed the instructions, rebooted both router and modem and PC.

The routers setup guide configures and I'm told the connection is successful, however, I test it by opening a browser and the green light on the router which should be constant just flashes and the internet fails to connect.

The ISP I'm with is O2, the original 02 Wireless Box 2 modem also had the same trouble, I swapped it with the Netgear to test it wasn't the modem.

I can also connect to the IP of both the router and modem to change settings through the admin panel, these seem to be setup correctly.

For some reason the router just won't connect to the modem.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks
A

I assume the Netgear Router is borrowed, as you state you are just testing to make sure it is not the Modem that is at fault.

The cable from your modem to the router should plug into the yellow WAN port. I'm assuming this is the case. If not try doing that first.

If that is the case and the router will not connect to the internet properly you need to determine why. Last Belkin Router I had had difficulty with DHCP, but as you can connect to the routers Admin page that is unlikely to be the problem, so we need to rule out DNS issues. Can you ping for example 212.58.253.68 (www.bbc.co.uk) through the Router?

If you can try pinging www.bbc.co.uk, if that doesn't work then you have a DNS issue. Try setting the routers DNS servers manually.

If however you cannot ping through the router it is not a DNS issue, and must therefore be an issue with the Router's or the Modem's connectivity. You do not specify wether you can get to the Modem's Admin page through the router.

This indicates it's a setup problem. What are the ip addresses and the netmasks of the 2 routers?

Out of curiosity is there a specific reason you are adding a router to your set up?

The O2 wireless box is a router itself, so if you need more ethernet sockets, or even if you just need them elsewhere in the house then you should be able to use a cheap ethernet switch.

Internet Settings
WAN MAC address 00-17-3F-9A-82-82
Connection Type Dynamic
Subnet mask 0.0.0.0
Wan IP 0.0.0.0
Default gateway 0.0.0.0
DNS Address 0.0.0.0

Features
NAT Enabled
Firewall Settings Disabled

Modem:

O2 wireless box II

O2_ADSL2plus

I've since connected the O2 box 2 back up as the Netgear didn't work on start up this morning.

One thing I have noticed with the 02 box is that it states Dynamic DNS is disabled I couldn't see a way of activating it, is this going to cause an issue?

Thanks
A

Hi,

Yes I'm trying to connect my Xbox 360 to the Xlink Kai service. It's a bit of a tricky setup and they recommend a router to connect the Xbox and PC to the modem.

I had tried connecting the 2 machines directly into the modem (both modems) but it wouldn't connect to the service so I thought I try a router.

Thanks

That's the WAN ip address, which you may want to delete from the posting.

What's the LAN ip address of the O2 box? is it as supplied - 192.168.1.254?
If is it, you need to get the two routers in the same subnet - for example change the Belkin to 192.168.1.1

Hi,

The Netgear modem was an old modem I had in the loft, followed the settings from O2 and temporarily replaced the 02 modem for elimination purposes.

The WAN port is green on the router but it's connected from the WAN and have tried in all 4 ports on the modem.

How do I ping through the router? Im using a mac but I also have windows on it if that'll help.

I can access the admin area for both the router and modem.

Thanks

Hi,

OK on my mac I've checked the network setting and checked the wireless settings which states the IP is 192.168.1.254

subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Does this help?

Thanks
