THOMSON ST546 DHCP question

[link to this post]

I am trying in vain to configure a Thomson ST546 to using DHCP in such a way that a PC on the LAN always gets the same IP address 192.168.1.6. Is there a way to configure this router to always use the same LAN addresses for certain PCs, according to their physical addresses?

Easiest way is to forward a port to the PC.

According to http://www.dsl.net.pk/manuals/ST546_UserGuide.pdf (p.82) there is a checkbox you may be able to use to achieve that.

Always give same address to DHCP clients:
Select this check box if you always want to use the same IP address for the
DHCP clients.

That's only useful for exposing certain web services, such as port 80 for web server, to the WAN IP-address.

The router gives the same IP address to the PC, which is what you wanted.

I tried that, it won't let me choose the LAN address for a particular PC according to its MAC address.

For the time being, I just set the PC on the LAN to not using automatic DHCP, just to use its own manually configured static LAN address.

Ideally it ought to be possible to keep a table of MAC addresses and static LAN IP-addresses in the router's DHCP server, but it looks like the T546 doesn't have this important feature frown

One possibility is to switch all but one PCs off. Reduce the IP pool to the single entry 192.168.0.6 then restart the PC with that checkbox ticked. Then expand the IP pool to its normal size.

I had an ST570 and from memory it has to be done through the CLI.

I am trying to log on to it to jog my memory but failing at the moment. I'll try to get the sequence as it may work for yours.

I worked out the 570 sequuence but believe a couple of parameters have been updated on newer models and this should work.

Use the CLI via Telnet. Login and you will get a menu.

dhcp server lease add clientid=11:22:33:44:55:66 pool=Address_Pool addr=192.168.1.6 leasetime=0 expiretime=0 hostname=jeffs_toy

Where: 11:22:33:44:55:66 is the MAC address
Address_Pool is the name of the addresses available - dhcp server pool list will give you the names
leasetime of 0 means the lease never needs renewing - you can set this to any value up to 1814400
expiretime of 0 means that it does not expire
hostname is there if you want to add a name to the DNS table (may or maynot be available)

The original was:

dhcp server lease add clientid=11:22:33:44:55:66 pool=Address_Pool addr=192.168.1.6 leasetime=-1 hostname=jeffs_toy

OR

I never did find anywhere in the GUI that would allow me to do it but the CLI was fairly easy.
