Which router for gaming?

[link to this post]

Hi guys,
Can anyone recomend a good router for gaming?
I have a broadband connection through Orange using the bt exchange. (no llu's on exchange)
I get between 6-8mb consistantly and want a good router that will connect with ethertnet cable and wirelessly for an x-box at the same time.
What do you guys think is the best deal at the moment?

Many Thanks
in advance
Steve

For gaming you really want to look at wired networking over wireless networking.

Wireless performance can be very hit and miss even with better quality routers depending on individual circumstances.

Which router depends upon price range and additional required features.

If all you are after is good wired gaming and wireless connectivity you should be ok with most wireless routers.

Generally I would avoid belkin kit and would recommend netgear for most people. For more in-depth requirements, and if you can justify the cost I would recommend draytek routers.

If you still wish to use wireless for gaming then I would advise you to look at the higher spec 802.11n wireless routers, particularly routers with 2 transmit and 2 receive paths or more.

Again I stand by the advise to avoid belkin, and recommendation of netgear, and draytek if you can justify the cost.

Alas my experience of other brands is limited, and so would suggest waiting for other recommendations.

happily chugging along on plusnet and Virginmedia (yes I am greedy)

Hi, I would like one myself when the price comes down. It looks the Billion 7800N has got everything 4-port Gigabit Switch, even the SNR Margin tweak facility and the router can be used with ADSL2/2+ Annex M, Cable, VDSL or Fibre modems and has Broadcom chipset.

Strange Billion grade the router for Small Office/Home Office users and it only has VPN pass-through, not VPN termination.

What a great router>
set it up on orange isp network in minutes.
Great wireless conectivity
Works on game ranger really well no continualy trying to get in game, straight in.
Dont have to keep typing either like before it stays in room no kick for inactivity
No lag its like a different game site
Didnt think a router would make such a difference.
Well done Billion what an awsome router.
