Windows 7 "Link Speed"

[link to this post]

Am I misunderstanding something here?

I've got a Linksys WRT320N Gigabit router connected via CAT6 to my PC (Windows 7 x64). The Realtek network adapter (on my MSI P55-GD80) is reporting it's speed set a 1Gbps full duplex yet in the networking section of WTM it shows the "link speed" as 100Mbps.

Is that correct? I assumed (maybe wrongly) that the link speed should show 1Gbps?!?

Duff cable?

Problem solved. Sort of.

I swapped the Cat 6 cable for an old Cat5e cable I've had for years and sure enough the link speed now shows as 1Gbps. If swap back the "new" Cat 6 cable it goes back down to 100Mbps.

I guess that means the Cat6 cable I recently purchased isn't so great?!?

Cat6 cable may have a faulty connector on one of the wires. I think gigabit uses an extra twisted pair, to send the signal (100Mbit doesn't). If that's flakey on the cable, the machine may drop back to using 100Mbit instead.

This is about the only thing I can think of. A proper cable tester would tell you for sure if there's any anomalies with the cable.

Gig uses all 4 pairs, 100 uses 2 pairs.

I have a cat5e network at home and after moving my PC and desk around in the bedroom and reconnecting everything back up, my reported network speed was 100MBps. I unplugged the cable and replugged it and the network status now reports 1Gbps.

Either my cable termination at the RJ45 socket or at the other end at the patch panel is suspect or it's just one of those things
