Extend range on BT Home Hub

[link to this post]

Need to extend the range on a BT Home Hub (version 2). Have tried using Homeplug units but the electrical wiring layout of the property prevents these from performing correctly. Is there an Access Point which will configure as a repeater and work successfully in conjunction with the BT Home Hub?

Hi, you could use a wireless access point to extend the wireless range; the draw back, a wireless access point tends to slow the network down a bit.

Are you saying these will specifically work in repeater mode, in conjunction with a BT Home Hub v2 ??

I have done the very thing that BatBoy linked to. Works perfectly.

Although I use homeplugs for the backhaul between AP and Router, you could run a length of CAT5 to do the same job.

Alternatively, if you haven't already get a set of the "AV" (200mbps) homeplugs, these have a reputation for working over longer range than the 14\85mbps versions.

Avoid plugging into extension strips and surge protectors. If you can identify a socket that is part of the mains ring, rather than a spur, even better. (you may need an electrician for that though)

Thanks shtu. Bit snookered on this one as Homeplugs won't do the job (see my original post). Re the possible increased range of 200Mb/1Gb Homeplugs, Interestingly I spoke to the supplier's technical section, and they were adamant that the greater bandwidth ones offered no better range. I guess a practical test is called for...

Thank you for pointing it out but I do understand the need for NOT using adaptors, 4-way power blocks, and not trying to use a ring main spur if at all possible.

No, what I really need is a standalone AP which will act as a pure repeater. I have successfully used APs of the same manufacture to achieve this, and I guess I could do the same here. Just seems a pity one can't use the wireless output of the BT Home Hub...

I am also told that the BT Home Hub v3 has increased WiFi range over the previous versions. Be interested to hear if anyone can confirm that.

Hi, I would not bother with wireless repeaters, it can half your network wireless speeds.

What I would do, find a good location where the home plugs will operate and connect a wireless access point in that location.
