ADSL vs ADSL 2 ?

[link to this post]

Hi

During O2's protracted investigation into my line dropouts, I discovered that ADSL gives me faster connection than ADSL2.

Hopefully the problem is now sorted (line changed between local exchange & my green box).

I've asked O2 to keep me on ADSL, due it performance increase & the fact that I'm never going to get anywhere near 8MB on this line.

Are there any disadvantages to ADSL compared to ADSL2 I should be aware of ?

thanks

No, none at all.

That said, it would be an idea for you to post your current modem/router statistics (sync speed, attenuation and SNRM) so that the resident wizards can confirm that you are obtaining the best service that your line can provide.

Depends on your attenuation. Post your router stats and we can say more.

But do you really mean ADSL2 (without the +) or ADSL2+?

Usually on long lines ADSL2 is faster than ADSL2+.

ADSL up to 8 Meg
ADSL2 up to 12 Meg, same frequencies as ADSL and generally as reliable
ADSL2+ up to 24Meg, on non-noisy short lines great, on long noisy lines less so.

Did you mean the + variant out of the three?

Thank you all

I'm almost certain it's ADSL (not 2 or 2+) as the reason I selected this option was that I'm never going to get near 8MB on this line (sync speed is just over 5) & ADSL increased my d/l speed to about 4.5 (from previous 3.8).

Will post my speedtest.net figures this evening.

Yes, but I meant are you comparing it with ADSL2 or ADSL2+?

Don't bother with speedtest figures; they are not relevant to the point. Just post your router stats.

OK - will do.

As far as I know O2 only offered me ADSL2+ or ADSL...

In terms of them controlling settings yes that is what most providers do, but assumming you have access to the router, you can force one of the three modes.

So yes on long lines not unusual to get a little better from ADSL2+ to ADSL, in theory should not be worse, but reality shows small differences.

is what you mean?

Or did you mean "better from ADSL2 rather than ADSL"?

I'm looking through the O2 II box web interface - can't see that data. Where do I find that info ?
