How to monitor bandwidth usage by IP address

[link to this post]

Hello

I have a problem..... I have several relatives staying for a long time (!) and they are all using my broadband.

Problem is that we went over my download limit by 17Gb this month (cost me £20), and of course no-one admits to excessive use.... I could of course ban them or limit their use... but I dont think that is very friendly and I'd rather know who is responsible before I undertake such draconian actions.

I am already using PRTG traffic grapher.... but this only shows me how much traffic is going through the router ports... and I cannot determine which IP is responsible for what!?

I have a netgear DG834GT with DGteam firmware and SNMP is turned on.... Is there any software / way I can show usage by IP address??

Any ideas??

They can of course change the machines IP addresses, so if not going to play ball on using less overall, then use the controls in the router to lock people out apart from at certain times, until they decide to share the bill.

Hmmmm

Yes, I know that limiting their usage is probably the wisest route to take (and perhaps the only), but I would really like to be able to proove which PC is using what. Then I can always charge them accordingly. I am pretty certain some of the relatives are only doing a bit of surfing (which I dont mind covering the cost) but if someone is downloading/ streaming films I would like to be able to discuss it first.

Sooooo...... is there anyway to monitor IP address usage?

How do you turn SNMP on on a DG834GT? Do you need DGteam firmware for that?

Maybe it is time to go down the route of free linux-based proxy server?

Catch up TV may be the problem. It uses a lot of GB.

Windows, Mac, Linux? Which are you using?

using windows OS mostly (though one relitive is linux)

Yes this has occured to me too...... ye see even the kids (and my wife) are able to use BBC iplayer on the Wii........ my bandwidth is slipping through my fingers.....

Suppose I might upgrade my package and charge everyone...... but I really need to know who is doing what so that I can charge/limit accordingly!!!!!!!!!!!

A proxy server is the way to go, and does mean investment of time to find out.

A quicker simpler method might be to block the common flash streaming port of 1735 in/out on the router, and turn on URL logging. Not sure on the DGTeam software, but on standard Netgear firmware surprising people by mentioning the odd site they visit can often temper their usage. You don't have to let on that you cannot see all the traffic.

OK.... quick update....

I was going to set up a proxy server..... honest.....

But then decided to get a quote from BT on upgrading my service to unlimited for a few months while relatives are here.

And BT made me an offer I couldnt refuse (so to speak!!):-

"Unlimited uncapped (they quoted 300Gb/month possible) for 12 months"
...... and it is £1 cheaper than I am presently paying for 40Gb/month (!!!!)

SOooooooooooooooo I took their offer.

PLEASE forgive me..... but this way is so much simpler.

Thanks all for your advice..... suspect I'll be back soon whining about the BT service.... hey ho.....

Dont tell the relatives, otherwise it will always be busy smile Pretend it is still limited, unless they are paying their fair share
