Probably, there is another thread where this has been discussed.

Modem - that provides router services too? Or just serves a single IP address?

If the later then a wireless AP is of little use.

Yes the 834GT can be reconfigured as can any wireless router.

Thanks for that, I think the modem only provides one IP address, so could I use it to totally replace the modem ??

If its ADSL or ADSL2+ over a POTS line, rather than ADSL or ADSL2+ over an ISDN line (common in Germany) then potentially the DG834GT could replace the modem completely.

You need to find out the username/password, and other settings. Netgear kit can usually auto configure most bits of the setup, so username and password are most critical.

Thanks for the reply and info, I'll have a chat with my mate and see what he says, I believe it is a POTS rather than ISDN so it might well work, it'll please his SO as she wants to use her Netbook via WiFi

normally: if you want to make your 'spare' router into an access point:
turn off its dhcp services, and ensure its local address is different from all other equipment on the network and connect one of its lan ports to the current network.
ps also best to do a hard/factory reset on equipment before re-purposing it.
