Home to Outhouse, can I use phone line extension for BB?

[link to this post]

I have a phone line in my new outhouse but am totally confused as to how to get on line?
In the house I have a Router connected to the BT master socket. The phone extension connects straight to this Master socket too. Do I need a second router and can you run 2 routers on 1 line?
Thanks in advance. S

You can only have one ADSL modem/router on any telephone line. If the phone in the outhouse is a simple extension, then you will need some other arrangement. The simplest solution is a wireless connection. This may be possible if the outhouse is not too far from the house. A wireless laptop will give you some indication of how far you can go.

I take it that you have mains power in the outhouse. You could install another router (but not modem) in the outhouse and connect it to the modem/router in the house using Ethernet cable. Alternatively, you could use HomePlug equipment to send data over the mains power line to the modem router.

Thanks, the wifi won't stretch to the outhouse, how good are these home plugs (and whats the best one), or would I be better to get a super long Ethernet cable, which presumably would connect to the original modem/router?
Thanks so much.

Get a decent length of EXTERNAL Cat5e, terminate each end into an RJ45 socket mounted on a faceplate with back box. Then a short patch lead from router to one RJ45 socket, and at the outhouse, another from RJ45 to PC or small switch so you can have several devices.

A long "Ethernet" cable on normal Cat5e can degrade quite quickly outdoors ... I have seen it last less than a year!

You can either go for the weatherproof UTP or Duct grade - you don't need SWA unless you are going to dig it up!

MHC's solution is the best if installation is not a problem. I have no personal experience with HomePlugs although TP-Link and D-Link seem to be well-accepted. However, I would not expect to get super-high speeds over long runs. Note that if you have a 3-phase supply, both adapters must be on the same phase.

If you decide to go the homeplug route, i can certainly recommend the Solwise units for reliability - I've got some here that have been running for over 5 years non-stop.

As for which "type", have a think about your intended use,

Bit of email and Internet - not much bandwidth needed.
Streaming full HD into the shed (and who doesn't smile ) requires a lot more bandwidth.

Also think about the number of network ports you might want in the shed.

I'd consider,

http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-plv-200av-pe.... for the house end, and

http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-av-3pe.htm 3 ports
or
http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-plv-200av-pew... 2 ports + wireless

for the shed.

Thanks guys, that's really useful, I wish I'd thought of this earlier, i think I'll run another cable out there, I will bury it with the power cable, is the one you recommended suitable?
Thanks again.

If you are burying the cable then you should use SWA (armoured) - the same as the power cable. Or find another way to protect it. The link also has SWA on that page - but it is not cheap.

Cat5e -20p / metre

Cat5e external - 30p / metre

Cat5e SWA - £1.50 / metre

Hose pipe has been used in the past to protect a bit of cat5 for external run. Gives a bit of protection against the accidental spade as well (although admittedly not enough if the spade is sharp and driven with some gusto).

It will do it ... but what is te cost of hose pipe? If teh OP does run it in a hose/water pipe, I would still recommend using External grade Cat5e.

And then, ensure there is warning tape on top - it is thin but seems to be effective against spades.
