Orange Brightbox wireless connection not working

[link to this post]

Just received one of their super dooper Brightbox routers, am connected with laptop by cable and my Samsung Galaxy picks up the wireless connection very well.

However.........

The laptop (about 4 or 5 years old) will not connect as wireless, I have used it across the country to connect to hotspots and it was working fine with the old Orange Livebox.

Two conversations with the Orange (or EE helpline) and they tell me I have a faulty wireless adapter which is software and I need to update. Have been through the device manager to update drivers but still no joy.

Googling I find that the problem does not seem to be widespread.

Anybody have any suggestions (I am running the home version of Vista)

Thanks

Does your laptop see the ssid of the router? if yes, have you tried to connect to it and been asked for a wireless key?

Yes I can see it and when I try to connect via network and sharing center, it briefly shows as connecting before disappearing without asking for password.

Brightbox probably uses WPA/WPA2 security by default, try turning off security and see if you can connect, then if you can

Enable WEP 64 bit
if works try
WEP 128 bit
then try
WPA
then try
WPA2

Ideal world WPA2 is wanted, WEP64 bit can be cracked easily, but does provide some basic security.

I would think you have not typed the correct wireless security password, also called wireless network key.

Have you used ipconfig /all to identify you wireless settings?
/flushdns
/release
/renew

To find detail of your wireless network connection Use ipconfig /all

In which case try turning the router down to only use 802.11g and go through the same steps, i.e. no security through to the best.

Some devices do not like the 802.11n systems

Both cable & wireless? No wonder it's confused!

Pull the cable & retry wireless. You may 1st need to delete the SSID's entry from the list of known previous networks in Wireless Connections.
