So I'm what many people would think of as a typical 'IT Geek', I'm always tinkering with my home network, I've got a server running my media setup, a media center PC, all automated all sitting on a custom DD-WRT router.
But now I have a challenge... a 5 year old who wants to play on the computer as much as her daddy...
So how do you marry up the convenience of an 'open' attitude to the internet, the ease of use of all my movies (not porn before you ask!) sitting nicely cataloged on my Plex media server and my smartphones with the parental responsibilities I need to consider now that I have a daughter who's taught herself to effortlessly use iPlayer, Plex and the internet?
There's a ridiculous number of disparate solutions out there, some client based, some ISP and some router/server based. All completely separate from each other.
I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and adopt the role of a our home IT admin guy, but its not my preferred option, does my wife really want to have to call 'IT Support' when she has a screaming 5 year old who can't watch Strictly Come Dancing because her daddies new Linux router/server/firewall has stopped working!??!
So, I'm coming you all all open arms for some ideas! How I can plan and implement a solution which handles a multitude of devices (iPad/iPhone/Android/Windows HTPC/Plex) without becoming counter-productive?
Any idea's more than welcome!
