SSID for guests - Homehub 5, Brightbox and SKY101

[link to this post]

Now I am sure this has been done to death in various forums but it doesnt work for me I suspect because later firmware versions. So requesting help!

I have recently opted for BT Infinity and have received a Home Hub 5. I would like to setup a network for guests to use (preferably with limited bandwidth) for when I have any, so that my devices like Google TV etc do not struggle with more users on the network. Homehub does not seem to be able to provide a feature of allowing creation of multiple SSIDs as Bright box allowed me to.

I have the brightbox lying around. I have tried to use it to set up a guest network. Config as below -

Home Hub 5 - IP Ranges 192.168.1.64 to 192.168.1.253
gateway - 192.168.1.254

Brightbox
Protocol - Routing
IP Static
IP Address 192.168.1.63
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.254

trying to apply this config on Brightbox gives me error which says <<Gateway configured in brightbox>> says you cannot use IP address 192.168.1.63. Please choose IP as dynamic or check IP address.

if I leave the IP address as dynamic and configure default gateway as 192.168.1.254 on Brightbox, it starts routing and any devices connected to homehub lose internet connectivity.

How do I configure Brightbox so that I can use the Brightbox SSID as guest with limited bandwidth and homehub for my own devices? Is homehub a better device allowing 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz connectivity or does it make sense to use HH as a modem and Brightbox as router so I can set up multiple SSIDs and limit bandwidth for guest SSID?

Thanks in advance!

Have you turned off DHCP in the Brightbox?

I don't know anything about the Brightbox so cannot really add anything more.

The Homehub offers a separate SSID for BT Wifi, so you could give your guests your username and password for that

Do you mean BT WiFi like BT openzone? That's accessible only to BT subscribers though?
Or if it's not BT openzone WiFi then how do I configure the guest BT WiFi?

Yes, BT Wifi is the renamed BT Openzone. I thought you are a BT subscriber which is why I suggested you give them your username and password - change it afterwards, obviously.

Your BT WiFi password is (on some accounts) one of your account passwords so I would suggest not doing it that way or you will be forever changing passwords or leaving it open to abuse.

I am a BT subscriber. What you say will work in theory but I don't want to give guests my BT WiFi password. It's not as good an experience for guests and as MHC says will be a hassle maintaining the password all the time.

I prefer a solution where I share my own network within limits I set out.
