Accessing the Internet with a router running a VPN client?

[link to this post]

If you have say an Asus router with a VPN client presumably all the devices on the local network can access devices at the VPN servers site. What happens if the local devices using the VPN client router want to access the wider Internet? How could they do this?

Either break out to the Internet via the VPN or VPN set-up only to handle a certain range of IP addresses

I think you would need Merlin or DD-WRT fw in order to make exceptions for certain devices. AFAIK it can't be done on stock fw.

Thank you. I am fairly good at choosing devices that do not support those! Ideally what I want is a device that has ADSl/VDSL, 1000mbps ports and ac wifi and does not cost to much. The phone line is underground so hopefully will not attract lightning strikes.

Two box solution makes it easier as many custom firmware routers don't have built in VDSL2 modems.
