Major slowdown in download speed

[link to this post]

I've been getting slow speed on my Newnet connection for the last two days. My normal speed is around 4Mbps, but it's now consistently measuring at only 0.3 Mbps! I'm based in Eastbourne.

Anyone else having a similar problem?

Newnet Status update page shows no issues, and I await a reply from their helpdesk.

I've been with Newnet since 2007 and have never known such a slow-down, I've been completely satisfied with their service until now.

What are your line stats, see here for help, and what does BT speed test say? (Full results as far as the end of the upload figures please).

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk
My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - IDNet Home Starter Fibre. Live BQM.

Hi, DSL stats are :
Uptime: 0 days, 1:34:04
Modulation: G.992.1 Annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 4,768
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [KB/KB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 19.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 26.0 / 43.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 12.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 5 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 42 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 13,943
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 213
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 196

BTspeed test says :
Download speedachieved during the test was - 3186 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1200-4000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :4768 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 4206 Kbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 309 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 448 Kbps

But, it is still going slow. Tbb test just now was 0.8 Mbps. Videos on youtube play about 3 seconds at a time before stopping to re-buffer. I haven't seen my broadband so slow since I was with BT broadband! (in 2007) !
Wonder what's going on here?
Thanks for the reply
Peter

I think you have two separate problems.

Did you have a thunderstorm a couple of days ago, or other cause of a lot of instability? The reason I ask is because your downstream noise margin is very high.

I would have suggested you reboot the router, but it looks as though you may have done that this afternoon. I'm wondering if the noise margin has been hiked up by instability. That is costing you at least 1Mbps connection speed.

The second and more immediate problem I suggest is people at work watching Andy Murray. Even my IDNet latency is suffering a little.

No thunderstorms that I know of. Thanks for pointing out the noise margin figure.
I am still getting very variable speeds throughout the day, around 1 Mbps sometimes, and it improves later in the evening. It's a similar effect to traffic limiting (throttling) that is quite normal with budget ISP's, which I have never seen before with Newnet. Before this problem started last week the speed was always rock solid at 3.8 or 4.2 Mbps, regardless of time of day. I have contacted Newnet about it.
As there has not been much response here this must be a localised issue, but it is annoying.

With that rate, you should have been prompted to complete the additional checks by logging in using different credentials.

Try that and report those results too. If they are fine, the issue is the ISP, however, if they are the same, the issue is either congestion at the exchange or possibly your equipment/setup.
