Re: ADSL speed dropped below 1mbit

OK, I removed my telephone from the filter socket and I then got this connection speed:

Wow, have I got a faulty telephone or filter? The ADSL filter is plugged into the master test socket. This is now looking promising...

Probably your filter has gone down.

They're only a few quid to replace but, if you're serious about getting the max speed, a filtered faceplate is the best bet.

You are now getting suitable speeds for your line.

By plugging into test socket you have also removed extension wiring from equation.

What extensions have you? Are they all filtered? Have you removed ring wire? Tried swapping filters?

You don't need to get Telnet adslctl stats most times; normal Connection Stats usually suffice,

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 17 Meg Untweaked 19 Meg Tweaked WBC

OP stated BT have disconnected all extensions.

OK next question, the speed has been stable at 2336 since I removed the telephone. When will the IP Profile increase? It's at 235 at the moment. Do you know how long that would take?

From past experience it usually takes about 1-5 days to increase in gaps

I'd expect that to jump up by the same time tomorrow, but no promises.

Patience is now the thing you need most - leave it as-is for now, and just wait.

This does point to either a filter or extension wiring problem - was there anything connected to the front part of the master socket?

OK, during the evening and overnight the following happened: the speed dropped down to 1888, then to 1088, then 800, then 768. When I woke in the morning I rebooted the router and the speed is now at 896. What can cause the sync speed to go from 2336 down to 768? The telephone is not plugged in so perhaps this was a red herring. The router is plugged into the master test socket and all extensions have been disconnected by BT at my request. I did this early on in my speed problems.

Stats here: http://postimage.org/image/gsn5g1yc/

So, there is a cause for my slow speed I just need to find out what. I have managed around 1768 connection speed stable for years, but something recently has changed and I'm not sure what. I have now ordered a BT Business Hub router (2wire 2700HGV) and another new filter.

Do you think it could be the router that's causing the issues? Is it unusual to see such a wide range of connection speeds? I got my hopes up yesterday when it connected at 2336, and I'm not sure how it even did that now. frown

Your SNR has gone back up to 10dB - your line, for whatever reason, is suffering stability issues at a lower SNR and so your line is now connecting at a slower speed in the hope of maintaining stability.

It's possibly the router but this is very unlikely, are you still using the filter which is possibly faulty (albeit with the phone disconnected)?

If so, my first point of call would be a replacement filter as a cheap test.

I would get back in-touch with the ISP after trying a different filter.

I doubt it's the router but it's worth a shot.

Also try to turn the router off as little as possible, as it assumes that the line disconnected as it cannot handle the connection speed if you turn it off and immediately back on.

If it's turned off, then turned back on 12 hours later that's obviously fine

This is just a recommendation and is not the cause of your issues unless you've been turning it off and on 20 times an hour like some mad person tongue

So yep, new filter, try your new router, then bug the ISP.
