Neighbours getting up to 60Mb , im getting 2

[link to this post]

Before I begin I would just like to say the information given is from
http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/streetsta... 7jd_download_8_all_all_6_1
So I cannot say how accurate it is but it did get my speed correct.

So whilst looking though speed tests in my area it appears that alot like me can get around 2Mb sometimes 4 but then I noticed there is a few that are getting way above 10Mb and even one that is getting 60Mb.

I am just wondering if this information is accurate and if so how as our exchange is around 4 miles away with 60db line attenuation, no fibre, no LLU but people are getting more than4Mb.

Notice all those getting fast speeds are on Virgin cable.

That site is only accurate for the small sample of users that bother to use it. Better trying TBB's one http://maps.thinkbroadband.com/?utm_source=mainsite&...

What exchange?

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 19 Meg WBC

Using a dongle on 3G?

Or "optimistic" speed tester .................

BT Infinity 2 - IP profile 77 / 20 - super fast!
Previously BE Unlimited - 21,000 Download 1,200 Upload but then moved house - 6,500 Down, 1Mb/s up - gutted!
Ex <n>ildram , been to SKY MAX - 15,225 Download

As Batboy says the link is broken but putting the code that appears, ML6, into the thinkbroadband map, you get a range of tests up to 8Mb.

Cumbernauld is the closest place to get 40+ and that has cable.

Looks like the fast people have ordered a Virgin Media cable service and the postcodes they cover can be seen on

maps.thinkbroadband.com (enable the Virgin layer and the green dots are each postcode they serve)

Virgin Media cable service is independent of the BT Telephone Exchange, but may not cover all the homes in your area.

Thanks for the clarification. Do you think it would be worthwhile emailing them to see if they could extend the line a few hundred metres or is that out of the question?

As a general rule Virgin Media has a £300 limit to connect each property (they do it free or for a lot less to you). This is about the cost of getting a cable 3 or 4 feet under a path across a garden into a house.

So unless it is already going past your house not much chance. If you got 20 neighbours to agree to sign up, then you might get them to extend network.

Virgin Media generally only add around 100,000 properties a year, which out of the 13 million who cannot get their service it is a bit of a lottery.

They might be able to help according to their official forum: http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Up-to-30Mb-Setup...
