How to improve broadband speeds, fibre 3G 4G not available

[link to this post]

Hi,
I am new to this forum and possibly not technically minded enough so please use baby language. wink smile

Our broadband speeds are between 2 and 4mgs and from the exchange could be 8mgs but we live too far away.

Fibre is unlikely to come to this area any time soon and my mobile signal is very poor with the 3G and 4G icons rarely seen on the phone in this area.

I have considered a satellite company but the reviews seem to suggest problems with this at times.
What is available to me to speed up the broadband speeds uploads and downloads?
Does anyone have any experience of using a satellite dish?

All depends on what you want from the satellite connection,

e.g. if you need remote access to systems and are typing interactively then the latency is annoying, but if its just email and web browsing generally fine, even streamed video should be fine and Skype will work so long as you remember to allow for the lag when talking to people.

But if you have 4 Mbps from ADSL I'd be wary of an outright get satellite recommendation, if you had just 0.5 Mbps then it would be a get satellite.

Out of interest why do you want faster speeds? Is it something you are trying to do which isn't working too well e.g. streaming?

On 4Meg you should be able to stream netflix, youtube, do online gaming, emails, browse the net, use a smart tv all just fine. Obviously if you have a big family, doing these things all at once might be a challenge. Keen to hear of problems you have.

Are you able to post any stats from your router ? Attenuation, SNR, sync rate and the like.

Listen to the interview of Clive Selley of Openreach on the Today programme this morning about 1 hour 51 minutes after the start. Should the government accept the Openreach offer?

Yes if only one person is streaming, no problem with the speeds. It is when multiple things are going on that things freeze or webpages won't load and computer life becomes extremely frustrating.

So if streaming a film and someone else is working on their websites and someone else is streaming cbeebies on iplayer - webpages won't load, film is dropped and then iplayer goes blank.

Wish I'd had the opportunity to listen to that. What was the offer and what was the outcome?
