Offered free router via email

[link to this post]

Just received an email from O2 offering me a new router free of charge and with no apparent change in terms and conditions.

The email does not state which router it is but the picture appears to be that of a THOMSON (TECHNICOLOR) TG582N.

Has anyone else received the same offer or has anyone else got this router who can tell me what it is like? O2 are promising a 'more reliable connection' and 'a better wi-fi range'.

NB 'Router available only to invited customers who have Home Broadband from O2. Subject to availability. This offer closes on Friday 15 June.'

Yes I've had one for a while. It's being offered initially I think, to all those with WBII routers on legacy packages.

It's very stable. For wireless G it's no better than WBII with the latest firmware. It has some false data in the GUI.....it racks up Error Seconds when there are none. Also mine doesn't seem to like Routerstats.....it feigns disconnection from the internet when RS is running, I think it happens when RS accesses the router when the router is particularly busy.

Also I think it's IPv6 compliant.

I was just about to post the same question!

Seeing as my old router is really, well, OLD, and wonderob says he has the new one and it's very stable, I think I'll take O2 up on their offer.

I presume it'll involve sending the old one back to O2 once the new one arrives.

The better wi-fi range is understandable as it is B/G/N compliant compared to the WBII which is only B/G.

I've also got one and can backup wonderob's observations that the the GUI does tell lies about the router stats

Uptime: 4 days, 0:18:59
DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.313 / 12.758
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 941,14 / 522,28

There isn't a cat in hells chance that the data transferred details are correct in a household with 3 active internet users (note, it also uses the European convention of ''.' being the thousands separator and "," as the decimal point.)

The older 780WL and 585v6 will not work when migrated to the new network (although can be made to with some effort)

same here, my old router has been sat in the bag since February!!! and I haven't been charged yet either.

BTW as far as i can see the sync speed is a bit better, but the boot up time from cold is about double that of the previous III rouer.

I'm getting sent a new router, a Wireless box V I'm fairly certain they said. Not as a consequence of an email but of a support call. Should be here Monday. I'm not getting the speeds that my line is capable of (5.5Mbps at best), even after the noise margin was set back to default after it was changed after line noise problems. The line is mostly quiet now, and I can no longer log in as SuperUser.

Think they said something about the old box 1 I have, which they couldn't update wasn't going to be suitable for upcoming upgrades. so hence new box.

But do I take it the box IV is the better? I was also wondering if the wireless would be any better with the new box. My only wireless use is the mobile, which is OK in the same room but take it to the bedroom (a flat so all on one floor) it disappears. There is wired glass in a partition between the living room where the router is and the hall so I wondered whether that wire mesh in effect would be a factor.
