....... There is wired glass in a partition between the living room where the router is and the hall so I wondered whether that wire mesh in effect would be a factor.

Foil backed plasterboard or bricks with high metallic mineral content are much more likely to be the culprit. In cases like this, ethernet or HomePlugs to a WAP is the only solution.

There are partition walls (plasterboard) but I don't know if plasterboard is foil backed - I would imagine not. I have an ethernet cable from the router to the PC so no problem there. Just the phone and a possibly for the future, the addition of a laptop or tablet for wireless. I think I remember being told about HomePlugs before going broadband when I joined here in 2008.

Thanks.

Yes, it's on an invitation basis, according to a post by O2 staff in their forum.

Mine turned up today, gets a better sync on the 3db profile than my Belkin 7633, wireless range is exactly the same (guess it would be better there were external aerials). But as it can't be tweaked (unless someone knows better?) it will stay in the box for emergencies. The Belkin is stable down to 1.5db which makes a considerable difference.

I'm seriously considering the Billion 7800N as a step up from the Belkin. V. pricey though and despite the overwhelming positive reviews there's no performance guarantees.

Hmmm. . .

The Jiffy, well plastic, bag o2 have sent with the new router is too small to fit the old router box in. Sigh. I guess I'll just have to reprint the details and shove it in another bag.

I have a wireless box 1 to send back. Bag is too small for router in its own box then in transit box. But mine will go OK without the outer transit box so it'll go back soon once I am fully confident about the box 5.

Actually the box 5 gets warm underneath, even though it is up on a couple strips chipboard to take it off the carpet. Might need to prop it up a little more. Old box 1 would be warm on top.

Even though I only had it on for half an hour or so while testing I thought it got pretty warm. Not sure I'd like it going 24/7. Probably a good call to keep it off the carpet.
