New wireless box 5 failed today

[link to this post]

I got a wireless box 5 delivered on Mon 21 May as my box 1 wouldn't connect a full speed, plus I could no longer log on as anything (it goes straight into Admin with no password, no dialogue).

I was pleased the box 5 appeared to fix the speed issue, but wireless use was poor (mobile phone only) it losing connection despite all indications it was connected. Did all the stuff changing channels etc.

Anyway, this evening I looked at my phone to see no wireless connection, then at the router to see only the power light on. I switched DSL lead, filter no difference. I had hung onto my old box despite having the bag to mail it back. So I connected that - and fine again. Seems like duff box 5. I reconnected it again and this time power light only then off then on again and no power light - nothing! Box 1 back and fine again and for now a goodly speed (for my line).

So I'll have to call them tomorrow to tell them and to make sure I don't get charged for not sending old box back!

Seems there is poor feedback so I was told in the week when I called wrt wireless performance of these new boxes. They said they might have to sent a box 2 or 4 instead. They new box 3 are so dinky, and no antennae.

Once in as Admin, do you have access to the "Change user" option?

I wouldn't worry about sending the old one back, I have three now and have never been charged yet, Having said that I have never used any of them as my own always gives better speed.

I called them today to tell then the box 5 failed. Then I ID'd myself as you have to. Before going any further they offered me three months free which I accepted, no new contract or anything.

Then I went into more detail about what happened with it. Yes it was exactly what others with the box with problems were telling them was occuring, including with the on/off button at the back and with the reset feature in the little hole. They are going to send out another box 5. *To myself why if there's a problem*. I mentioned the very flaky wireless performance as I reported earlier. Yes we know - we'll send a new box. *groan* Said I was not keen to have another given the problems they admit to and I have had but I would accept another and go from there.

This was a senior adviser, who's name I was given, and he said he would call be when the box arrived or if I need to call to ask to speak to him. The cynical side of me thinks the free 3 months is a 'keep him sweet' offer. After all they shelled out for a load of new routers that somehow are duff.

We'll see.

Yes have access but the username and password fields blank. If I put in SuperUser and the box s/n it simply clears the fields again. Ditto Administrator.

Just a general comment for the O2 Wireless Box 5! My O2 Box V, TG582n, has been working perfectly since O2 has given me the replacement for my OLD v2 about 2 months back. Both my V5's sync speed, especially its wireless connection for WAP-WAP2, is better than my previously v2, i.e. my unbranded Tablet had stopped freezing its wireless (WAP protocol) connection now, and generally its wireless connections for both my 2x laptops, 2x desktops wired and a Sumsung's mobile phone is very reliable indeed! For logging to the web-browser, I just use: Administrator as User Name and my v5's S/N as Password. Therefore your O2 Box V's experience is totally different from mine in a bad case!
Good luck for trying another O2 Box v.

Like OCDragon I have had the free reoplacement for several months now. Also I have had no problems. WiFi is better than the old box. Now have nothing on the ethernet connection. Computer and 2 TVs always on the wireless connection plus a laptop. In the current weather using the phone and tablet sat in the garden without any problems. Give another one a try and then tell us how you get on That be be more constructive.

Yep I'm quite prepared to give another box 5 a go. I will ask of I can hold on to the box 1 as a standby for the time being though. Without it I'd be sunk with no net access other than PAYG dial up.

Re: Wireless box 5 (again)

I now have another wireless box 5 (since Tuesday). As before the connection to the pc by ethernet cable is ok (notwithstanding the phone line being noisy yet again so not connected as well as it ought). But again wireless to the mobile is flaky. Ok for a bit then stops, although appearing to remain connected. o2 Guru reckon it must be my phone not 'n' compatible and o2 only support computer wireless connections (which I don't have). I have since found from the Samsung site that the phone is 802.11b/g/n. Guru suggested looking on the various forums for a fix.

Was also told I could hang onto old wireless box 1, for the time being, while there's the reliability issue with the box 5 but I must return it so they receive it within 30 days or get £20 charged.
