Change in traffic management.

[link to this post]

Have O2 changed the traffic management rules recently.

I see for The Works package it now says
"Sharing files (peer-to-peer) - As fast as your line/home can handle (any time)"

I thought this was restricted at peak times.

Yes, you're right. Compare my O2 Tips page with the current O2 one. The All Rounder streaming has changed as well.

I shall have to update mine smile. (I'll leave it a couple of days for people to compare).

Job done, but with the old entries retained with strikeouts. Note the AUP though.
... But if you download large files at peak times every day, we might ask you to cut down. And if you keep overdoing it, we could close your account.

I'm on the original o2 8Mb package as my line could never handle anything faster. It just happens that the package I originally signed upto was unlimited, so I've deliberately not taken any new offers and I download quite a bit a month. I could never cope on a metered package, unless the cap was incredibly high.

I used to recommend o2 to people in the past, but not since they started using traffic shaping on new products.

If you're getting 8.6Mbps on a speed test, as per your sig, then the result is invalid. The maximum sync on your package is 8191kbps - 8192kbps possibly but no-one has ever posted one that I have seen.

The maximum speed test result possible is under 7Mbps. (Maybe your sig is a typo for 6.8Mbps? That's about right).

He can't be on the O2 Adsl Max package (Access was it?); witness his reported up speed.

So he must think he's on 8 Meg capped LLU. Is it possible that O2 no longer bother to cap it? Or didn't they raise it to 16 Meg once?

"Standard" is the name of the legacy 8Mbps LLU, and the maximum sync on ADSL Max is 8128kbps.

The new "Basics" isn't capped, but "Standard" always was. There is a vague possibility that he got a speed test result of 8.6Mbps in the first 2-3 days of his connection, as it wasn't capped at that stage. Partly to let the DLM assess the line, partly we thought to encourage people to trade up having seen what they could get if they did.

In either case, the pointlessness of speed test results in a sig is again demonstrated. At least it's just a one-liner for it smile.

From the speediest results, between 3/9/11 and 18/1/12.

Sorry, can't be any more specific.

Simon.
