Here we go again :(

[link to this post]

I am getting really weary of my line.

It has NEVER been totally stable - given to odd periods of resyncing at apparently random times. The line is just under 3km physical - confirmed both my BT themselves and and by tracing a very obvious (only) trunk route that was constructed with the "new" exchange (constructed by the post office to replace 2 exchanges for adjacent towns) and a new road. On ADSL2+ the line has an attenuation of 43/44db (up from 40db on 20cn) our cabinet is around 375m from here. The property is fed via duct to a pole that feeds the 20 properties in this development, the pole was installed as a replacement for ducts around 14 years ago, the pole itself was changed again last year due to a "defect" and all the connections then were interrupted (I assume they were remade at that time)

The problem has been present ever since I first had ADSL on Pipex (512K service). So count several routers, filters (hell even the computers themselves have been through several changes both in hardware and o/s). Extensions were firstly rewired in cat 5 and then removed. The problem has been present even when the router is run alone in the test socket. Pretty much every piece of electrical equipment in the flat has been changed, Last year Openreach changed the pair from the exchange to our cabinet, which if anything resulted in a slightly lower speed from the line overall.

When I first moved to Vivaciti I was recording heady speeds in the mid 8 Mb/s range, but that is a distant memory now and I am now only a little above what I was getting on 20cn with Enta, Over the last 10 days we have seen 11 resyncs, the last 2 days we have had it happening twice a day.

My question is how do I get Openreach to take this seriously? It has been looked at several times the only consistent thing with Openreach is the threat of SFI charges, Im just annoyed that they seem more keen to keep collecting money for this mouldy mess of copper without actually wanting to fix it. Router-wise I have tried a couple of Speedtouch 585v6's, several 2-wire HGV2700's and currently jave a Fritzbox 7390, Nothing has helped. The one thing I have gained is that the Fritz logs record each drop in the same manner

21.08.13 20:36:15 Internet connection established successfully. IP address: **.***.***.***, DNS server: ***,**,***.*** and ***.**.***.*** Gateway: **,***.***.***
21.08.13 20:36:04 Timeout during PPP negotiation.
21.08.13 20:35:50 DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 7676/1021 kbit/s).
21.08.13 20:35:36 DSL synchronization starting (training).
21.08.13 20:35:04 Internet connection cleared.
21.08.13 20:35:04 DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization).

It is always the same message - no variation.

We are currently connected at Current throughput 7676 / 1021 kbit/s

Signal-to-noise ratio dB 9 / 8
Line attenuation dB 44 / 24

That reflects a 1 db drop in downstream SNR from earlier, and a rise of 400 kbit/s according to the router - the previois "wobble" had dropped us to 72xxkbit/s

I'm hoping that some of the really knowledgeable guys here will take pity on me and give me a pointer to the possible cause that I can relay to my ISP - as the line is going through one of its more manic periods again, I will be on the phone again to them tomorrow. I have asked here before without much success, but maybe this time someone will pick up the ball for me.

Any ISP that thinks that selling my click traffic is acceptable is MisinPHORMed

Do you know if any of your neighbours have a similar issue? do you know if at any time there is any noise on the voice line?

Sorry for the delayed reply - I have been busy with the health issues of a frail and elderly parent.

No Noise has been noticed on the line and no reports from the neighbours of issues. The problem has always been here and Openjoke seem disinterested in it - I have wondered if they have any clue about what the issue is - or if they just cant be bothered - which feels more likely - especially given that last year before I moved to Vivaciti they raised an SFI charge for "checking the cabinet" and tweaking something at the exchange in response to an Enta Tech noticing that the line was syncing below FTL at the time.

Last October I managed a 9xxx KBits/s speedtest at Speedtest.net (using xilos server), today the result was 9/1/2013 17:34 GMT Download 6.40 Mb/s / Upload 0.83 Mb/s
Which seems to mirror your own preferred service which recorded rates of
Download 6356 KBits/s (794.5 KBytes/s) / Upload 833 KBits/s (104.125 KBytes/s) in a test taken within a few minutes of the speedtest.net one.

To illustrate how erratic things can be and to show the steady decline in the quality of the line my speedtest.net results are HERE which show the increase in speeds when I left Enta last Feb and also chart the loss of speed since late last year.

I KNOW it is NOT a Vivaciti issue, the problem is related to the cryptic message in the Fritzbox event logs the most recent example is given below
29.08.13 22:42:39 Internet connection established successfully. IP address: 77.xxx.xxx.xxx, DNS server: 208.67.222.222 and 194.74.65.68, Gateway: 77.xxx.xxx.xxx
29.08.13 22:42:25 Timeout during PPP negotiation.
29.08.13 22:42:11 DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 7187/1017 kbit/s).
29.08.13 22:41:58 DSL synchronization starting (training).
29.08.13 22:41:38 Internet connection cleared.
29.08.13 22:41:38 DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization).

Always the same message, and always the same problem throughout all the changes that have taken place over the years trying to eliminate the problem.

Current stats are
Max. DSLAM throughput kbit/s 24576 1024
Min. DSLAM throughput kbit/s 288 64
Attainable throughput kbit/s 7608 1024
Current throughput kbit/s 7187 1017

Latency 8 ms 6 ms
Bitswap on off
Seamless Rate Adaptation off off
Impulse Noise Protection (INP) 0.9 0.9
Energy-saving mode L2 NA - -

Signal-to-noise ratio dB 7 9
Line attenuation dB 44 25
Power Reduction dB 0 0
Carrier record A43 A43

Seconds With Remediable Errors (FEC) Not Remediable Errors (CRC)
Errors (ES) Many Errors (SES) per

FRITZ!Box 455 0 6292 298640 0.15 0
DSL central exchange 29 0 0.57 4 0

I'm not sure what else I can tell you that would help, Openreach dont seem to have any idea what the problem is - in fact the attitude seems to be "it mostly works - what more do you want?"

05.09.13 20:31:13 DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 7615/1020 kbit/s).

After all todays activity the router is reporting SNR @ 9db both up and down.
