Surfwise Variety, daisy hop problem.

[link to this post]

Hi have not had a problem in a good while on this package from Vivaciti but for the last 2 weeks my on-line gaming as gone down the flusher.

I am usually in the top two players on bops 2 , 1 mw2 etc but i just could not go positive I have been like have I lost my reflexes.

My son who also games said "why are the over all pings lower than usual but I am getting lag spikes?".

So i ran some tracerts and found that te0-1-0-0.cr02.ts1.bb.daisyplc.net [62.72.137.12
2] is having problems.

This is just one of many tracerts.

9:51 13/10/13

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.254
2 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms lo0.ar85.ts1.bb.daisyplc.net [62.72.136.163]
3 15 ms 14 ms 15 ms te0-1-0-6.cr02.ts1.bb.daisyplc.net [62.72.145.17

4 63 ms 66 ms 80 ms te0-1-0-0.cr02.ts1.bb.daisyplc.net [62.72.137.12

9 16 ms 15 ms 15 ms 132.185.255.156
10 16 ms 16 ms 16 ms www-vip.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [212.58.253.67]

Is anyone else seeing this on the same package from Vivaciti?

Cheers guys.

TiMeTraVeLeR,

I'm glad someone else is seeing the same problem. I have had this issue for 13 days.

My gaming is also flushed away. I have also seen a problem when running a tracert highlighting Daisy, which seems to be the problem. I have also have run many tracerts and seeing the same problem as you.

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.253.67] 10/10/2013 20:41
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.254
2 14 ms 13 ms 13 ms lo0.ar85.tn5.bb.daisyplc.net [62.72.136.43]
3 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms 62.72.137.197
4 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms 62.72.137.197
5 14 ms 14 ms 55 ms te0-1-0-0.cr02.ts1.bb.daisyplc.net [62.72.137.12
2]
6 14 ms 15 ms 13 ms pipex-te4-3-503.thdo.bbc.co.uk [62.72.139.66]
7 * * * Request timed out.
8 16 ms 15 ms 15 ms ae0.er01.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [132.185.254.93]
9 15 ms 15 ms 15 ms 132.185.255.156
10 16 ms 15 ms 15 ms www-vip.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [212.58.253.67]

Lets hope they sort it soon as gaming is a nightmare.

A high figure in a line of a tracert is not normally a problem as long as the ones after it are back to low figures. It just means that router has better things to do than respond instantly to pings.

Similarly a timeout - that normally means it is set not to respond to pings at all.

Such tracerts are only really indicative of a problem if the high line is followed by the rest being around the same high figure or worse. If the following ones are the same as the preceding ones it shows the ping packets for those are being passed through just fine.

As Bob says, a step that fails to respond to traceroute / ping simply means it's not set to respond. A step that shows variable latency is of little significance if the steps beyond show stable latency, as routers often prioritise forwarding packets promptly (which affects traffic passing through that router) over responding to diagnostic traffic like traceroute and ping.

The results posted so far are of limited significance, as the reported problems are with game servers and the results given are to the BBC.

What would be helpful is a traceroute and ping results for the game server(s) where there are problems. A longer term diagnostic such as the output of pathping, WinMTR or PingPlotter may be even more illustrative.

Ok thanks for the info, this is not a permanent problem it is sporadic 62.72.137.12
2 pings at 14ms sometimes and others times 80 would this be normal?

Also my ping's were 24ms to bbc and when they have now lowered to 14ms I have had nothing but awful games on xbox and also my son on league of legends is giving me earache saying "what have you done, its hitting 300ms"

That made me check the tracert which now and again brings back what I thought was a problem at that hop.

Edit: i have just done some LoL game server tracerts and all is fine at the moment

You must have a problem of some sort, but that hop is unlikely to be it. Not impossible, depending on why it is laggy.

There is a possibility that your son's xBox is getting penalised for the new low latency, but I'm not a gamer and know very little on this subject. What is definite is that a lot of game servers now slug low latency connections as otherwise those always win, so people on high latency connections end up giving up and leaving.

I wouldn't expect it to slug to anything near 300ms though!

I am on the xbox 360 playing the call of duty franchises, my son is on a p.c playing league of legends amongst others.

And yes your right the better your connection with cod games the worse you get hit by lag compensation when people with worse latency are in the same lobby as you.

I will keep a close eye on all things gaming, pings and jitter over the next few days thanks for your help smile

I hope you get it sorted! Just, as you see, it isn't diagnosed as easily as using a tracert would suggest.

It might be useful to know that the latency drop from 24ms to 14ms suggests a change from an interleaved to a fast path connection. Interleaved can often be forced, and might put things back to how they were if that has indeed happened.

If you haven't raised a ticket, you need to smile. Else your lad will be giving you hell.

It was Fast path before the better latency, i am happy with the ping being quicker, i think it might be lag compensation being stronger in certain circumstances.

My son said his gaming was fine all yesterday ( could have been the server he was on in the past playing up).

So this could of been me jumping the gun seeing the high ping on that server during many tests and putting two and two together and getting 5 .

I have learned many things reading posts from yourself and other knowledgeable members on Tbb and i now know about reading tracerts better smile

Cheers.

Hi,
As has been said that hop showing a higher response time is not indicative of a problem, a trace to the gaming servers would also help, but I would say it may be best to raise a ticket with us to enable this to be looked into.
