Trying to help an elderly customer

[link to this post]

Do pipex have a customer portal where details of the current package and usage can be viewed. My friend says his speed has dropped dramatically over the last few weeks. BT speed test gives a d/l of 92 kbps frown

He's doesn't know what package he is on and the USB modem doesn't help. The only paper work he can find refers to "extreme5" what ever that is. We are in the process of buying a router to see what his line stats are like.

Extreme was a log on domain back when I was on the 512k service. My sister who joined some time later was on extreme2 and I know of someone who I think is still on extreme4.

I think the problem you are up against is the fact that Pipex has been passed from one owner to another and the brand has been neglected - as it is no longer sold as a domestic ISP afaik. Enquiries are likely to meet with attempts to tie your friend into a new contract of 12 or 18 months. This may be a good opportunity to have a look at the options available.

I have never regretted leaving them after the lies about late afternoon/evening throttling.

Just My Opinion.... YMMV

Any ISP that thinks that selling my click traffic is acceptable is MisinPHORMed

Thanks, I think I've just about convinced him to change supplier. However he has no idea what type of contract he's on etc., if Pipex say he's on a 12 month contract, we can't really argue.

Depending what his line stats show, if he could get speeds faster than 2 meg, he now seems to think he's on a 2 meg fixed speed, then I'll convince him to move. He reckons he pays around £15 pm.

I would have thought he was well outside his 12 months by now.

You used to be able to view your package but it was a long time ago that I used Pipex.

Some of the USB modems allow you to view the connection stats, Dr Speedtouch was the app for the Thomson USB 330.

Currently trying to persuade my parents to change from Pipex but not having much luck as they don't want the hassle of informing people about a new email address crazy.

Yep - I was on xtreme back in March 2002 and can recall xtreme5 - these applied to pipes as they were brought on line.

As most will know Pipex ceased to exist several years ago and is currently owned by TalkTalk.

I too never regretted departing before Tiscali got their sticky hands on the brand.

How does one obtain a MAC from Pipex, I've read a couple of nightmare situations from ex customers.

CS is certainly not their strong point. If you contact them on your friends behalf they probably won't talk to you quoting the DPA at every opportunity frown.
