A question of speeds

[link to this post]

I'm thinking of migrating BT to Plusnet on the Extra package.

The Plusnet site quotes a speed as low as 512Kb from download servers between 8 - 10pm & that the quoted download servers (Content Distribution Networks) cover the BBC.

Are people having problems with Iplayer due to reduced speeds of the Traffic Prioritisation ?

Also, can you have a static IP on Extra ?

Iplayer comes under the streaming column, as do things like youtube, internet radio and other streaming TV services, so it runs at line speed all the time.

However, downloading using the desktop player may be classed as from a download server so subject to speed restrictions, although I'm not 100% sure on that.

Great.
I wasn't sure as following the Download Servers link on the Broadband Download Speeds page, you get to http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/do...

which quotes:-
----------
Content Distribution Networks (CDN)
•Akamai
•Limelight Networks
•Level 3
Many downloads from Apple, Microsoft, PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE and multimedia content from sites such as the BBC, eBay and Facebook are hosted on one of the above Content Distribution Networks. Depending on your account type, downloads from these sources may be slowed during busy times.
---------

Hence, I thought I better ask people who use it.

Also, do you know if static IP's are available on Extra ?

You will get a dynamic IP when the account is created. You need to go to the add on section of your member centre page to request a static IP (you can ask for more than one but need to give a very good reason for having more). There is a one-off set-up fee of £5 payable for this.

[edit for typo]

Cheers.

I only need the one static IP for my server.

It was/is a pain using a dynamic, as my server has to route outgoing mail via ISP's mail server, & you have to jump through hoops & get my server users accounts setup on the BT end, else the mail gets rejected frown

I didn't mind to much with BT, as I had the ADSL / BTvision free to staff, but now I've retired, I have to pay, £25'ish a month frown
So now I want a static IP to save the above aggro, & send direct from my server to the world.

Dumped BTvision & gone to freesat, so it's just the BT ADSL to dump.

On market 3 exchange, so Extra will be cheap. smile Pity the exchange isn't 21CN yet frown
