Prudent planning

[link to this post]

We will shortly be increasing the capacity of our 21CN host links. It's these host links that we use to deliver bandwidth to the majority of customers on our 'Up to 20Mbps' and Fibre services.

This is a significantly higher increase than has been done historically. The majority of this capacity is planned to cover the increase in traffic due to the upcoming sport events.

Be interesting to know what other ISPs are doing.

My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - Plusnet Value Fibre FTTC 80/20 trial.

Not to mention the BBC. No point in increased infrastructure capacity if the broadcaster is sitting on dial-up. grin

The Euro 2012 latency was noticeable (it occurred during my ADSL2+ changeover, so was annoying), but the Beeb feeds were stuttery, due to demand.

I wonder if this is to coincide with BTw capacity increases?

I would hope most are planning for the event.

Whatever happened to the multicast trials with the BBC that Plusnet took part in some years ago?

The BBC multicast trial made no sense for most ISPs because it did nothing to reduce the load on the gateways. The only way it would make sense would be if the multicast went to the exchange so that all the users on one exchange (irrespective of their ISP) were accessing the same multicast stream - and that's not possible because the connections are tunnelled from the user straight to the ISPs gateway.
