Internet almost unusable in the evenings

[link to this post]

Hello,

Our internet has recently become almost unusable in the evenings between about 7pm and 10pm. This is very inconvenient as we want to be watching things like Netflix at that time. A speedtest at that time shows it swinging wildly between about 5bps to 0 ! Usually we get a rock solid 11bps download at all other times

After looking at another thread "Plusnet ADSL Disconnections" the problem they had seemed to be the SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 5,7 / 3,1 setting.

I have checked our router stats and can see SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 3.1.

I am thinking that we are therefore having the same problem.

Theirs was fixed by setting the Down Margin to 6, rather than 3.1.

Could someone set our SM Margin (Down) to 6db to see if that improves our situation. (or does this need a ticket raising with Plusnet first?)

Thank you

John

It's possible that it is down to margin being too low but my money would be on it being contention - possibly contention on the particular gateway you are connected to. I think that if you reboot the router there is a chance of switching gateway (someone on Plusnet will come along in a minute and probably confirm how you check which gateway you are on and how to get it to hopefully switch to another).

If you do want to change the target SNR then you would need to raise a ticket. However, have you checked what the SNR is straight after a reboot as that will confirm if 3dB is the target it is set at.

Gateway checker.

To change gateway, close the PPP session for a couple of minutes. (Or reboot the router as you said). Closing the session is best, as it can take a few tries - you can pick up the one you were already on. Multiple reboots can upset the DLM.

Is that a wired or wireless connection to the router? That's the first thing to check, as neighbouring wifi's could cause this.

Assuming as soon as you reboot your SNR is around 3db - then yes, raise a ticket.

Then post the Ticket Number here ....

Either the ticket will be answered or some Plusnet rep will see your post here and change your SNR to 6.

Just rebooted router and got

Uptime: 0 days, 0:00:51
DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,183 / 13,459
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 24.48 / 45.75
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.8 / 0.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 17.6 / 32.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.5 / 3.0

so still at 3.0. I will raise a ticket.

If it's only in the evenings at peak times then the issue is contention not your perfectly reasonable 3dB NM. Your connection stats are good.
