Why am I deemed to be in Newport Pagnell?

[link to this post]

Not a problem as such, just a bit of a quirk. But if I have denied/disabled explicit location, websites that use geolocation, and attempt to derive it from my IP address, seem to place me in Newport Pagnell!

Why there? It used to default to Sheffield, which made some kind of sense, as it was obviously basing it on PN's location, not mine.

I'm not aware of PN having any facility in Newport Pagnell.

Is it a static or dynamic IP? If it is dynamic then perhaps a previous user was in Newport Pagnell and the data is picking up on that?

To me, geolocation is just a bad guess. Which is handy because it means I can watch all the Premier League soccer online.

Dynamic. But I think it has been showing this for some time. Then again, I don't reconnect very often. My last reconnection is currently showing at eight days. I think the Newport Pagnell business started before that, but I'm not absolutely sure.

It doesn't really matter, except for a few weather sites etc, which appear to assume I want the forecast for NP. I also notice that if I search for a high street store, for example, Google will produce me a nice map, showing branches close to NP. As a rule, I'm not searching for a local branch anyway, but rather their website, so it doesn't really matter. It just feels a bit strange, after a while, when it's the default supposition for everything.

I've got nothing against Newport Pagnell - although I think I only know it as a service station, which is hardly flattering. For some reason, I just seem to notice it more than the assumption always being Sheffield.

Is NP somewhere between you and London (or Sheffield) ? I can imagine some sort of BT / PN kit having an IP address and RIPE holding Newport Pagnell (or lat/long that is close to NP) somehow being picked up, if your browser / device is not identifying a location.

Biggest nuisance I found with geolocation (on Android) was some rail timetable App which insisted on taking my current location (I usually have GPS etc turned off) rather than letting me simply enter places A and B for the route (I was after train times from another location).

I'm pretty certain that Google knows where I live [1]

However, I get a lot of Australian web sites returned in Google searches. frown

Nothing wrong with Newport Pagnell if you like Charity Shops!

I used to live near there.
