Plusnet to Virgin - £30 Line cancellation charge ?

[link to this post]

I am switching to Virgin Media from Plusnet, having discovered that the Virgin cabinet is just a few feet from my house, and the BT Openreach Fibre cabinet is more like 1/4 mile away, and I've been told some of my cable is aluminium, so the speeds have not been as high as I hoped.

I have been with Plusnet significantly longer than the minimum contract term of 18 months.

Now they tell me that they are charging me a £30 line cancellation fee - something to do with BT charging them to disconnect the line.

Is this correct? I can't find any reference to this charge on the Plusnet web guidance regarding cancelling phone or broadband.

(I will make it work. I won't sleep til I do!)

Yes, it's correct. BT charge for disconnecting the line at the exchange. Some ISPs pass it on and some don't. I believe it has been in PlusNet's T&Cs for quite some time and is not related to the term of the contract.

I'm afraid it is.

See "Cessation fee" in Table 1.6.

Also see this page, with all the details.

Hmmmm.

The BT Wholesale charge seems to be £5.37 and Openreach £0. I'm sure it used to be £29 + Vat but can't find any trace of that.

Keep the phone line with plusnet and go for virgin media broadband stand alone instead! So, you won't be charged then! Job done! Remember the phone line price will increasing to £16.99 with virgin media later this month 24th November.

[re: adslmax] [link to this post]

I believe it was the broadband cancellation that levied the charge rather than the phone line.

EDIT : Here they have details of the cessation charge. States:

It's a charge applied by BT Wholesale (the suppliers of our broadband network) to cover the cost of the work required to remove broadband from a telephone line.

EDIT2: It also states:

Cessation charges don't apply if:
•You use a MAC key to switch to another provider (this is called a migration)
•You're a customer without a contract on any of the following products:
•Plusnet Essentials
•Unlimited
•Unlimited Fibre
•Unlimited Fibre Extra

Try this one.

The ADSLx entry gives zero on Market A, £31.12 on Market B
The FTTC entry gives zero on Market A, £5.37 on Market B. I think the OP will be on Market B but that's not certain.

Weird.

Where in the Member Centre please? I can't see any reference in my Account Details.

Ah - in Order History. I think you will find that when your 18-months minimum term ends, that line will be marked "Expired" and one with the £30 Cessation charge added.

Presumably because if you leave within the minimum term various other charges are levied.

I don't think Plusnet will allow for just a phone line without broadband, also do you have any proof that Virgin are increasing there Line Rental and that Plusnet won't..

Also £30 one off is a lot cheaper than keeping a line that's not required or even having it bundled with another service/s.

Ask Plusnet if there's still a charge if you transfer your number to Virgin Media (If you want a Line of course)

I remember reading that transferring your services means no charge (not sure if this will apply to Virgin though as a MAC will not be used)

Plusnet do allow people to retain the phone when migrating the broadband, but that is totally irrelevant as the fee is for terminating the broadband and nothing to do with the phone.

I know its a Broadband cease charge, As far as Line Rental being mentioned, that was in reply to ADSLMAX where he mentioned keeping the line instead of paying £30.00

My apologies regarding the Phone without Broadband mistake, However my post was mostly angled at the comment by ADSLMAX regarding keeping the phone line instead of paying £30.00 fee and getting VM standalone Broadband as well.

Not worth it. All the special deals are on broadband with phone line and even at the standard price the charge for standalone broadband is almost as much as broadband+line rental.

Whether you keep the phone or not the £30 is still payable - as you agree it is a broadband cease charge...

I have a Plusnet a/c which is no longer subject to a contract. I did manage to contact Plusnet and get them to flag my account to show that no cessation charge should be applied. I did this because I expect to want to quit in the not to distant future.

Handy. As I quoted in one of my earlier posts they don't charge it on Plusnet Essentials, Unlimited, Unlimited Fibre or Unlimited Fibre Extra. If you aren't on one of those and have got them to remove it then that is good news.

Reason for not charging on those is that charge is not mentioned in T and C

I have a Plusnet Unlimited service. The contract expired last February, and I obtained confirmation in writing that I would not be charged in April. I have yet to, exercise this right, but hope to do so in the next couple of months.

Hopefully this helps to clarify:

The charge can apply to any customer who has a broadband cease placed on their line.

Generally, the main reasons for broadband ceases are:

A broadband account is cancelled (without switching providers)
Switching providers without a MAC key
The telephone line used to provide broadband is cut off

Cessation charges don't apply if:

You use a MAC key to switch to another provider (this is called a migration)
You're a customer without a contract on any of the following products:
Plusnet Essentials
Unlimited
Unlimited Fibre
Unlimited Fibre Extra

No, the cease charge is shown in the Plusnet Broadband Family service terms, and I would have expected to pay if I had terminated the service during a contract. .

I should say that I joined after the cease charges were introduced.

OK, you confused me then with this:

Plusnet Unlimited service

I assumed as you capitalised the U that it was the "Unlimited" package rather than an unlimited package.
