Virus causing IE to crash

[link to this post]

Last week the computer picked up a virus which caused fake alerts that IE had encountered a propblem and needed to close. If you ignored the warning, IE continued to work fine, but if you clicked on Send/Don't send a report, IE would shut down.

AVG couldn't pick up the virus, but I have cleaned the system with NOD 32 and Malwarebyte with System Restore off and with the PC in Safe Mode, and a number of problems were picked up and fixed. I have also run a Sophos win32.brontok cleaner, as early on I must have got some message that referred to brontok.

I don't get the fake alerts any more, but now IE crashes from time to time and the AOL client software is OK for email, but crashes if you try to go to any internet link. IE crashes if you go to the Microsoft Update site.

Grateful for any suggestions for next steps.

thanks

Philip

When the problem started it was IE7. IE has since updated to IE8 and the problem is the same.

Thanks - but anything less drastic to try first?

micosofts very own malicious software removal tool. It's actually quite good at getting rid of IE related mailware.

See if SUPERAntiSpyware detects any problems, best to run it in safe mode first.
