Shared drives showing on Ubuntu on network

[link to this post]

Main machine running WIN XP Pro. I have a few shared folders in All Users.

Only these folders can be seen on the network by other Win 7 or XP machines.

The main C: drive is shown as sharing, "for administrative purposes only", is the warning message when I attempt to deselect.

When a Ubuntu 12.04 machine is connected, everything on C: is shown.

What am I doing wrong? and how do I prevent it happening

It is what Windows refers to as an administrative share. It's not particularly clever - the whole C: drive is shared with the share name of c$ - the $ on the end makes other Windows machines not show the share when browsing the network shares. However they can connect to it by specifying it e.g.

\\WINXPPro\c$

All Ubuntu is doing is showing that the share exists while the other Windows machines are simply just not displaying it.

You're not doing anything wrong. You can prevent it by not sharing the C: drive for administrative purposes.

Thanks, a little clearer now.

I assume that I have to manually stop C: from sharing, everytime I reboot, according to the warning message.

This share was created for administrative purposes only. The share will reappear when the server service is stopped and restarted or the computer is rebooted.

That is, if I wish to keep the sharing folders only visible on the network.

Or I have to disable the feature in Ubuntu.

The automatic creation of the admin shares can be disabled using Group Policy - been years since I messed with that and can't remember whether you'd need to use the Microsoft Management Console snap-in or just Policy Editor (poledit.exe)

You can also do it with a registry change as detailed here: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/W...
